About the object
At first glance, this automated glockenspiel looks like a square oak table to which a box with a small piano keyboard for playing by hand is attached. A memorial with a glockenspiel for the victims of both world wars was erected in 1955 in the thick tower of the Lower Castle. The company Gebrüder Rincker cast 25 bronze bells, including one with the inscription ‘In memory of the dead, a warning to the living’. The control system was supplied by Ed. Korfhage & Söhne, including an automatic timer and a keyboard. After 47 years, the well-worn machine was replaced by a digital control system. In 2022, the Siegerlandmuseum added the historical automated control unit to its permanent exhibition.
