About the object
This pot has no lid; it is a heavy, cast-iron cauldron around 30 cm in diameter, with a round handle and three feet. A so-called bridal pot, it was produced as a wedding present for the Achenbach couple, as recorded on the two surrounding inscription bands. The names of the married couple are reproduced in two rows with tactile letters: ‘Johann Friederich Achenbach’ and ‘Marie Elisabeth Achenbachin’. The presumed wedding date is indicated here: ‘Anno 1764 the 20 May’. The bridal pot was probably cast in the Marienborn Ironworks in Siegen. Alongside pots and ovens, cannon balls were produced there, for example. Apart from the Marienborn Ironworks, there was only one other smelter in Siegerland that manufactured cast-iron articles, the Sieg Ironworks.
