About the object

Guild chests were used by guilds to safeguard their objects of value, such as their guild seal, as well as important documents like certificates, bills, letters and protocols. These were formally opened at official functions and ceremonies. This chest looks like a lockable trunk made of dark wood with a rounded lid. Around one metre in length, it is painted and provided with iron fittings. The chest of the Siegen Bakers’ Guild is dated to the year 1765. In keeping with the trade practised, its lock is decorated with an iron fitting in the shape of a pretzel. The rounded lid is adorned with the guild’s coat of arms.
