About the object
This knife with a wooden handle has a wide blade that is around 20 cm long and curves forward somewhat. Hauberg knives – also called ‘Knipp’ – were used to remove branches from felled trees. The blade has been sharpened on one side and decorated with nine hallmarks in the shape of flowers. The initials ‘AN’ are carved into the wooden handle.
Hauberg knives served as tools for the so-called Siegerland Hauberg economy. In its historically traditional form, this is a mixed coppice, field and pasture economy along cooperative lines. The goal above all was to extract wood, which could then be used as fuel or could be processed into charcoal for iron smelting.
