About the object
These four figures, carved from solid wood and some 90 cm high, can be found side by side on the base of a supporting pillar in the foyer of the Siegerlandmuseum. They depict a hammersmith with an apron, a shepherd with a staff, a miner and a Hauberg labourer in working clothes. All four figures appear somewhat static, with their arms close to their bodies and their gaze directed straight ahead. The figures were created around 1938 during the renovation of this part of the building.
At the time, the figures were described as ‘typical characters of the former Siegerland’. From a modern-day perspective, the historical and economic diversity of the region was not sufficiently described in this way. Other important economic sectors certainly existed such as the regional textile industry.
