About the object

The landscape-format painting in a richly decorated frame shows the biblical scene of the flight from Sodom. Lot is allowed to leave the sinful city with his wife and two daughters. Wrapped in a dark cloak, the father of the family is led through the city gate by an angel in a wine-red robe. His wife walks beside him, while the two daughters follow behind, likewise guided by an angel. One of them carries a basket with golden vessels. Between 1634 and 1635, Simon Floquet became a master of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke, one of the most important artists’ associations of his day. He exported his works not only to Germany, but to Austria and Spain, too. Floquet modelled this oil painting on a copperplate engraving from the Rubens workshop. The etching was made by Lucas Vorsterman based on a model by Peter Paul Rubens and can likewise be found in the Siegerlandmuseum collection. It is presented in the digital collection on the website.
