About the object

This life-sized bronze statue shows a miner in his clothing. He wears a beard, cap and boots. Decorations such as several button plackets on the chest or the miner’s typical mallets and iron on the sleeves and belt have been visibly elaborated. The miner has placed his right hand in front of his eyes like a visor to look into the distance. With his left hand, he appears to be leaning against something. This statue was created in 1908 for the grave of Friederich Marx, director of the mine and teacher at the Siegen College of Mining. The statue and matching tunnel mouth hole formed part of his burial place in the Lindenberg cemetery in Siegen. In 1970 the ‘Miner’ came to the city of Siegen as a gift of the deceased man’s grandson. In the 1980s discussions took place about situating him in the grounds of the Upper Castle or at the Reinhold-Forster-Erbstollen. Ultimately, it was decided that the most fitting place for the ‘Miner’ would be in the Siegerlandmuseum’s show mine.
