About the object

A mechanical device made of iron with a small and large cogwheel stands on the wooden deck of a rail wagon. Winches like this were used in mining to move wagons and goods. Various forms of energy have been used for propulsion throughout the history of mining: from muscle power and water power to compressed air and electricity. This example was driven by compressed air. It originates from the Rasselskaute and Friedrich mines and came to the museum in 1965 following the closure of both mines in the mid-1950s and 1960s. In addition to the compressed air connection, the main components of the winch are: gearshift, brake lever, rope drum, round frame and machine frame. Power was transmitted by means of two gear drives. The winch could be pushed to its place of use with the trolley.
