About the object

With a diameter of almost 40.7 cm, this circular white plaster relief sits in a square, wooden, gold-coloured frame. The relief shows the eye specialist Johann Heinrich Jung in profile at the age of 66. Inscribed on the cut surface of the relief are the surname of the artist, the sculptor Johann Heinrich Dannecker, and the production year. Johann Heinrich Jung, called Jung-Stilling, was born in Grund on September 12th, 1740. During his studies in Strasbourg in the early 1770s he met Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Alongside his work as an eye specialist for cataract operations, Jung-Stilling also became known for his success as a writer. His autobiographical memoir ‘Henrich Stilling’s Youth’ was published by Goethe in 1777. In 2012, the Grund Homeland Association (Heimatverein), together with the Sauerland Mountain Association and the town of Hilchenbach, opened the so-called Jung-Stilling-Rundweg, a hiking trail around Grund.
