About the object
This bell cast from bronze has a diameter of around 39 cm. Its inscription describes it as the bell of the students in Siegen (CAMPANA STUDIOSORUM SIGENENSIUM 1700). ‘IN GOD'S NAME I FLOWED, DILMAN SCHID OF ASLAR CAST ME’, reads the inscription in the frieze of the bell. It is decorated with a number of fine horizontal lines. Originally, the school bell hung in the ridge turret of St. Nicholas’ Church and then in the tower of the district primary school (former prince’s stables of the Lower Castle, on the site of the former Karstadt department store). Presumably, it was used to indicate the time of lessons. It can be rung by visitors in the ‘Welsche Haube’ of the Siegerlandmuseum.
