About the object

The base of this hand-made model of a Siegerland mine is decorated with so-called steps. Steps (‘Stufen’) is the term used for especially fine mineral stones. The building with its small tower and chimney sits on the base, into which a lift shaft has been built. Underneath the shaft two figures stand wearing mining uniform with two wagons between them. The model is an heirloom and was made by the previous owner’s grandfather, a miner, together with his foreman. The model is also described as a ‘stepped pyramid’. The owner’s father said to her at the time that the pyramid was unfinished. It was missing candles, meaning we can assume that it is a pyramid in the sense of a lighting frame, as is often put up at Christmas. The owner remembered having seen pyramids of this kind in other households, too.
