About the object

The Roman general Publius Scipio Africanus is known for his victory over Hannibal in the Second Punic War. According to historical accounts, when Scipio’s soldiers captured the city of Cartagena, they took as plunder for their commander not only the treasury but also a beautiful woman. However, when Scipio learned that the woman was betrothed, he returned her to her fiancé. He also gave back the ransom provided by her parents. Rubens rendered this scene, symbolic of magnanimity, in a way reminiscent of the Judgement of Solomon. Scipio sits enthroned on a podium, while the young woman in front of him begs for mercy.
